The California Medical Board issues Physician and Surgeon’s licenses to allow the medical practice in California, in which Physicians and Surgeons can diagnose, prescribe, as well as administer treatment to individuals suffering from any disease or injury. To be eligible for a Physician’s and Surgeon’s License applicant must have:
- The applicant must be graduated from a USA, Canadian, or any other international medical school approved by the Board
- Received credit for either 12 months or 24 months of board-approved postgraduate training
- Passed all required examinations under the BPC section 2170
Apply Online for license
To apply online the applicant should complete the information using the Board’s BreEZe online services system.
- Answer all the application questions required and pay all required fees
- Attach a photo of 2 x 2 of passport size. Photos that are altered are not acceptable
- Attach a copy of the completed Request for Live Scan Service or for the electronic fingerprints
- Attach the explanation to Application Question
- Attach timeline of activities and supporting documents for verifying requests to complete the licensing process

California Medical Board License Renewal
The Medical Board of California assists in renewing and managing the status of the license or registration. The applicant must renew the license after every 2 years. There is no grace period given after expiration and it is illegal to practice medicine after the expiration of the license.
Renewal NoticesThe California Medical Board notifies you multiple times that license is expired. Prior to 180 days the board will send an email to renew the license online and again 150 days before the license’s expiration date.
If the license is not renewed within 120 days that time the medical Board will mail the paper Renewal notice to the Address of Record. At that time the applicant can renew the license online by visiting BreEZe or simply by submitting the renewal notice as well as payment by mail.
Failure to Renew- If the license is not renewed within the 30 days following the date of expiration the Board will notify by mail. In addition, the license status of the applicant is displayed as Delinquent on the website.
- If the license is not renewed within 90 days in such a case you have to pay the penalty fees and standard renewal fee.

Section 2113 California Medical Board
If the applicant does not qualify for a physician’s and surgeon’s license and is offered a full-time position in faculty that time applicant is granted a certificate of the registration for engaging him/her in the practice of medicine but only to the extent that the practice is incident to and a necessary part of the connection with the faculty position under BPC section 2113. This certificate of registration does not authorize to admit of patients or a skilled or assisted facility unless the facility is affiliated with the sponsoring medical school. To qualify for Special Program Permit under BPC 2113 the requirements are
- Applicant must have completed at least 3 years of basic postgraduate training
- Prior to the issuance of a license the applicant must have the United States Social Security Number(SSN) or (ITIN) an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
